In the last years important advances have been made in the understanding of Ravenna’s History. New archaeological sites, some of which are already open to the public while others will follow suit, have brought to light important evidence through which its glorious past has been reconstructed .The history of the city has its own roots in the first decades of the VI century b.C. when Ravenna was a complex of stilt houses distributed along a series of small islets along the Padusa Valley.
During the Roman Occupation its infrastructures increased: a new port, seat of the Military fleet in control of the Eastern Seas, and an imposing canal connecting the Po river and the south of the city, transformed Ravenna in the main port of the Roman Empire.

Watch out: In order to join one of our bike tours you need to be confident in your use of a bicycle
This Bike Tour (which takes place for a 10% on tarmac and 90% on gravel, pine groves and bike lanes) will lead you towards the Old Porto di Classe, important archeological area near the town center or Ravenna: a long water canal made of various lagoons wide enough to accommodate up to 250 warships during the V and VI centuries, when Ravenna was the capital of the Western Roman Empire and its commercial seaport was at its greatest moment.
You will then proceed towards the church of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, an imposing and majestic cathedral 8 km far from the center of Ravenna. The Cathedral was built during the first half of the VI century and is considered the greatest example of an Early Christian church. Regardless of the many spoliations it has suffered during the course of past centuries, the church still shows the beauty of its original structure, and you will be mesmerized by the colorful mosaics of its apsidal conch and the ancient marbled sarcophagus of the Archbishops, placed along its side aisles.
From this point your tour will leave the typical tourist racks and lead you into nature: you will reach the coast and the sea riding through fields and natural parks, admiring alluring fields and unpolluted meadows.
This amazing field trip cannot finish without a delicious meal in a restaurant near the sea, in the charming Lido di Dante, followed by a relaxing hour to do some shopping or gather your strength back. We will return following the suggestive river bank of Daresena del Po which will take us back to Ravenna.
