Bologna’s towers were built during the middle ages for different reasons: some were a sign of wealth for Noble families, some were used defensive towers or lookout posts, some for residential use. During the height of Bologna’s splendour (1200 / 1400 A.D) the city displayed over 100 towers of which 24 have survived, included the 2 most famous ones: Asinelli and Garisenda.
There are also different theories as to the origins of Bologna’s famous porticoes. Some claim that they were built as an enlargement of the existing buildings, in order to keep up with the demographic increase due to the economic development of the city; some claim they were built to protect from the weather (both rain and shine) the precious feedstock and processed goods which were carried along the city, and that had to be protected as means to Bologna’s economic development.
Don’t miss the opportunity of discovering an ancient and unexpected Bologna. With this Running Tour our professional Tour Guides will take you along the city centre, among magnificent towers: some high and slim reaching towards the sky, some cut off and embedded in the urban tissue. You will run through streets, alleys, squares and along amazing Porticoes, each and one of them different and unique: some large, narrow and decorated with frescoes, some high or short, even some of them erected in wood and still perfectly preserved nowadays. Sweeping through them all you will feel, as the Bolognese people do, embraced by a feeling of belonging, like walking among the walls of your own home.
A unique experience that will deeply touch you and stay in your memories forever.
