Ferrara reached its peak in importance and richness during the Renaissance under the control of the Este family, who turned the city into a lively cultural and artistic centre. Yet, its great and long cultural season started with the foundation of its university, in the 14th century, followed by a crescendo of splendour that still mesmerize its visitors.
This tour through the city centre will take you to the main highlights of Ferrara: from the imposing Cathedral of San Giorgio, with its richly decorated façade, and the nearby town hall, Palazzo Municipale, seat of the Estensi court, your will get to the narrow streets of the former Jewish Ghetto.
You will also stroll under the arches of Via delle Volte, an example of the ancient medieval centre of the city. Another one is Castello Estense, Ferrara’s fortress, a perfectly preserved castle with its intact moat.
Finally, you will jump forward in time and reach the famous Renaissance-style Palazzo dei Diamanti, whose name comes from its amazingly rich façade composed by 8000 pyramidal stones, a unique feature which will remain engraved in your memories as a symbol of this unforgettable experience.
